Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reciter: Praise be to Allah, and may peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions:
He said (may Allah have mercy on him): “The chapter on affirming the obligation of zakah, explaining its virtue, and what is related to it:
Allah the Exalted said:
And establish prayer and give zakah
.
And Allah the Exalted said:
And they were not commanded except to worship Allah, [being] sincere to Him in religion, inclining to truth, and to establish prayer and to give zakah. And that is the correct religion.
[Al-Bayyinah 98:5]
.
And He said:
Take, [O, Muhammad], from their wealth a charity by which you purify them and cause them increase
[At-Tawbah 9:103]
"
.

The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful:
Al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) said in his book *Riyad al-Salihin*: “The chapter on affirming the obligation of zakah, explaining its virtue, and what is related to it”: Then he mentioned three verses:
The first verse: His saying, the Exalted:
And establish prayer and give zakah
: So establishing prayer is that you perform it correctly in the manner that came from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family and Companions).
And giving zakah: it is giving it to its rightful recipient. The meaning of zakah and the explanation of its benefits have already been mentioned in what Allah the Exalted facilitated in yesterday’s lesson.
Then he mentioned the second verse, which is His saying, the Exalted:
And they were not commanded except to worship Allah, [being] sincere to Him in religion, inclining to truth, and to establish prayer and to give zakah. And that is the correct religion.
[Al-Bayyinah 98:5]
,
And they were not commanded
meaning by that, people,
except to worship Allah
[Al-Bayyinah 98:5]
that is: they humble themselves to Him in worship with everything by which they worship Him, whether in creed, speech, or action,
sincere to Him in religion
[Al-A'raf 7:29]
that is: being sincere to Him in their deeds. And the sincerity of deeds to Allah is that a person does not seek with his deed anything other than Allah, Mighty and Majestic. He does not seek worldly life, nor status, nor leadership, nor anything else. He does not desire anything except the reward of Allah.
And His saying:
inclining to truth حنفاء
means inclining away from shirk. So it is sincerity without associating partners.
and to establish prayer and give zakah
And this is the evidence in His saying:
and to give zakah ويؤتوا الزكاة
,
And that is the religion of the upright
that: meaning: the worship of Allah the Exalted, being sincere to Him in religion, establishing prayer, and giving zakah,
the religion of the upright دين القيمة
that is: the religion of the upright faith. So it is the deed that is pleasing to Allah, Mighty and Majestic.
And He said, the Exalted:
Take, [O, Muhammad], from their wealth a charity
[At-Tawbah 9:103]
: The address is to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family and Companions),
Take, [O, Muhammad], from their wealth a charity
[At-Tawbah 9:103]
meaning by that, zakah,
by which you purify them and cause them increase, and invoke [Allah 's blessings] upon them
[At-Tawbah 9:103]
: it purifies them from sins and vile character traits,
As for its being a purification from sins, it is due to the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family and Companions):
charity extinguishes bad deeds just as water extinguishes fire
Sunan Ibn Majah 4210Da’if (Darussalam)
.
And as for its being a purification from vile character traits, it is because it associates a person with the noble and the doers of good by what he spends of the wealth of zakah for its rightful recipients.
and cause them to increase وتزكيهم بها
that is: it develops their character after the purification from vile character traits; it develops noble character traits.
and cause them to increase وتزكيهم بها
It also purifies them in religion. So it is a purification of religion and a purification of character.
and pray for them وصل عليهم
that is: pray for them with your prayer. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family and Companions), when people came to him with their charity, would say:
O Allah, have mercy on them.
in fulfillment of the command of Allah:
Indeed, your invocations are reassurance for them
[At-Tawbah 9:103]
: Your prayer for them means your supplication for them with prayer is a tranquility for them. Their souls become calm toward it, their hearts become at ease, their breasts expand, and it becomes easy for them to spend their wealth.
And Allah is Hearing and Knowing.
[Al-Baqarah 2:224]
: So in these three verses is evidence for the obligation of zakah and that it is among the best of deeds. And the discussion of the hadiths will come, if Allah wills, later.
