The Reciter: 'Asim ibn al-Nadr al-Taymi narrated to us: 'Ubayd Allah narrated to us. He said: And Qutaybah ibn Sa'id narrated to us: Layth narrated from Ibn 'Ujlan, both of them from Sami, from Abu Salih, from Abu Hurayrah. This is Qutaybah's hadith
the poor Emigrants coming to God’s Messenger and saying, “The possessors of great wealth have obtained all the highest grades and lasting bliss.” When he asked what they meant they replied, “They pray as we do, they fast as we do, they give alms but we do not, and they set slaves free but we do not.” So God’s Messenger said, “Shall I not teach you something by which you will catch up on those who have preceded you and get ahead of those who come after you, only those who do as you do being more excellent than you?” On their replying, “Certainly, Messenger of God,” he said, “Extol God, declare His greatness, and praise Him thirty-three times after every prayer.”
أن فقراء المهاجرين أتوا رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم فقالوا : ذهب أهل الدثور بالدرجات العلي والنعيم المقيم فقال : وما ذاك ؟ قالوا يصلون كما نصلي ويصومون كما نصوم ويتصدقون ولا نتصدق ويعتقون ولا نعتق فقال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم : أفلا أعلمكم شيئا تدركون به من سبقكم وتسبقون به من بعدكم ولا يكون أحد أفضل منكم إلا من صنع مثل ما صنعتم، قالوا : بلى يا رسول الله قال : تسبحون وتكبرون وتحمدون دبر كل صلاة ثلاثا وثلاثين times. Abu Salih said:
The poor amongst the emigrants returned to the Messenger of Allah (may peace upon him) saying: Our brethren, the possessors, of property have heard what we have done and they did the same. So the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: This is Allah's Grace which He gives to whom He wishes.
فرجع فقراء المهاجرين إلى رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم فقالوا سمع إخواننا أهل الأموال بما فعلنا ففعلوا مثله فقال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم : ذلك فضل الله يؤتيه من يشاء , and others besides Qutaybah added in this hadith from Layth from Ibn 'Ujlan: Sami said: I narrated this hadith to some of my family, and one of them said, "You have made a mistake; he only said: Glorify Allah thirty-three times, praise Allah thirty-three times, and magnify Allah thirty-three times." So I returned to Abu Salih and told him that. He took my hand and said: Allahu Akbar, Subhan Allah, Alhamdulillah, Allahu Akbar, Subhan Allah, Alhamdulillah, until you reach thirty-three of all of them. Ibn 'Ujlan said: I narrated this hadith to Rajaa ibn Haywah, and he narrated to me the same from Abu Salih from Abu Hurayrah from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).
