The Shaykh’s explanation of an error in the hadith: “O Allah, forgive my people, for they do not know”

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : They say that when the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) was tortured by his people and they gashed his head, he said:
O Allah! Forgive my nation, for they have no knowledge.
Sahih al-Bukhari 3477
This narration contains an error in two respects—... may Allah reward you with good—in terms of the narration and in terms of the legal ruling. As for the narration, the hadith in "Sahih al-Bukhari" states that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recounted the story of a prophet whose people beat him and gashed his head, and he said:
My Lord, forgive my people, for they do not know.
Sahih Muslim 1792a
So the hadith is not about our Prophet (peace be upon him), but rather our Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is recounting a prophet before him whose people beat him. Many people make this mistake, and this is not a new error; it is an error found in books of biography where it is stated that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
O Allah! Forgive my nation, for they have no knowledge.
Sahih al-Bukhari 3477
The correct version, as we mentioned, is that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recounted this about a prophet before him, using the wording:
My Lord, forgive my people, for they do not know.
Sahih Muslim 1792a
The second error is that it was not permissible for the Messenger (peace be upon him) to seek forgiveness for the polytheists after the prohibition of doing so was revealed in the Noble Qur'an. Therefore, if the hadith had been related to him (peace be upon him), it would have been with the first wording:
O Allah, guide my people
and not with the wording:
O Allah, forgive my people
because these people are disbelievers and polytheists, and it is not permissible to supplicate for their forgiveness. However, supplicating for their mercy is required. Therefore, we say that this is not an application of the hadith that deviates from the correct narration, but rather because no matter what they do, we cannot remove them from the circle of Islam, so we say:
O Allah! Forgive my nation, for they have no knowledge.
Sahih al-Bukhari 3477

The student : The first one:
O Allah, guide
.
Another student: ... Our brother Abu Malik, in what Allah has revealed to him, may Allah reward you with good...
The student : ... This is obligatory upon him.
The student : May Allah bless you.
Another student: ... Abdul-Aziz and Saleh are our sons above all else, but we defend others. Should we not defend them?

The Shaykh : May Allah reward you with good.
The student : This is not a joke, this is your coffee pot.
Another student: ... They consider Abdul-Aziz and Saleh to be among them.

The Shaykh : They have taken all the good, if Allah wills.
The student : So when you say Abdul-Aziz and Saleh, immediately the mind turns to...

The Shaykh : Praise be to Allah, and perhaps the matter is as it is said: "Birds fall with their own kind."
The student : Yes, by Allah, they are people of... truly good people.
Another student: ...

The Shaykh : May Allah bless you, there is no god but Allah.
The student : He came from Palestine.
Another student: I met them, our professor.

The Shaykh: Yes.
The student : You met them...

The Shaykh: When?
The student : From one... at Abu Abdullah's place.

The Shaykh : And where?
The student : With the Kuwaitis.
Another student: ... We left, I am resting you.
The student : This Shaykh Ahmad yesterday...
Another student: I mean, sometimes the call makes the heart feel good, and sometimes one hesitates. These people, glory be to Allah, are amazing.

The Shaykh : ... .
The student : ... .

The Shaykh : ... I mean, here I was also transferred to the mosque.
The student : Yes, the mosque of...
Another student: ...

The Shaykh : Also, "Birds fall with their own kind."
The student : Praise be to Allah.

The Shaykh : Due to his saying (peace be upon him):
How is it that I see you in separate groups?
Sunan Abi Dawud 4823Sahih (Al-Albani)
, and another hadith and other hadiths; perhaps when the gathering is complete, it would be good to present them to the listeners, if Allah wills. Please, Abu Abdullah.
The student : And we seek refuge in Allah from the evils of our souls and from the badness of our deeds. Whom Allah guides, there is no one who can misguide him, and whom He misguides, there is no one who can guide him. And I bear witness that there is no god but Allah alone, with no partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and His Messenger,
O you who have believed, fear Allah as He should be feared and do not die except as Muslims [in submission to Him].
[Ali 'Imran 3:102]
,
O mankind, fear your Lord, who created you from one soul and created from it its mate and dispersed from both of them many men and women. And fear Allah, through whom you ask one another, and the wombs. Indeed Allah is ever, over you, an Observer.
[An-Nisa 4:1]
,
(70) O you who have believed, fear Allah and speak words of appropriate justice. (71) He will [then] amend for you your deeds and forgive you your sins. And whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger has certainly attained a great attainment.
[Al-Ahzab 33:70-71]
. As for what follows:
Indeed, the truest speech is the Book of Allah, and the best guidance is the guidance of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). The worst of matters are their innovations, every innovation is a religious innovation, every religious innovation is misguidance, and every misguidance is in the Fire.
