The Shaykh : So he becomes eager to convey people's words, some about others, and he adorns himself with this before people. He comes to so-and-so and says, "So-and-so said such and such about you." He may be telling the truth, and he may be lying. Even if he is telling the truth, it is forbidden and among the major sins. Allah the Exalted has forbidden obeying such a man, and He said:
(10) And do not obey every worthless habitual swearer (11) [And] scorner, going about with malicious gossip - ولا تطع كل حلاف مهين هماز مشاء بنميم
[Al-Qalam 68:10-11]
Some scholars of knowledge said: "If someone tells you a story, tell it to him," meaning if someone conveys people's words about you, he will convey your words as well. So beware of him, do not obey him, and do not pay attention to him.
And in this is evidence of the excellence of the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) teaching, where he employs methods that ensure the listener's attention, especially if he perceives negligence in the listener. It is recommended that he employ the method that alerts him, because the purpose of address is understanding, comprehension, and retention. So he presents to the person the beneficial methods for that.
If someone were to say, "If a person conveys one person's words about another as advice, for example, if he sees a person who is deceived by another who confides his secrets to him and keeps him company, and this person discloses his companion's secrets to the one who confides in him and deceives him, is it permissible for him to speak about him?" The answer is yes, he may speak about him and say, "O so-and-so, beware of this person, for he conveys your words and says such and such about you." Because this falls under the category of advice; his aim is not to sow discord among people, but his aim is to offer advice to his companion. And Allah the Exalted says:
And Allah knows the corrupter from the amender والله يعلم المفسد من المصلح
[Al-Baqarah 2:220]
And success is from Allah.
