The Ruling on Suicide Operations.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : And among this is the action of some people who commit suicide: a person wears bombs, ties them to his belly, then goes to a group of the enemy and detonates them, so he is the first to die. This is considered killing oneself, and he will be punished in Hellfire with what he used to kill himself, may Allah protect us from that. These people call themselves "martyrs" (fada'iyyin), but they have killed themselves, so they will be punished in the Fire of Hell with what they used to kill themselves. They are not martyrs because they did a forbidden act. The martyr is the one who draws near to Allah the Exalted by doing what Allah commanded him to do, not by doing what He forbade. And Allah Mighty and Majestic says:
And do not kill yourselves [or one another]. Indeed, Allah is to you ever Merciful. لا تقتلوا أنفسكم إن الله كان بكم رحيما
[An-Nisa 4:29]
and He says:
do not throw [yourselves] with your [own] hands into destruction [by refraining]. And do good; indeed, Allah loves the doers of good. لا تلقوا بأيديكم إلى التهلكة وأحسنوا إن الله يحب المحسنين
[Al-Baqarah 2:195]
But I say that as for these people we hear about who do that, we hope that they will not be punished because they are ignorant and interpreting the matter, but they have no reward and they are not martyrs because they did what Allah did not permit, rather what Allah forbade.
If someone asks, "Did not the Companions take risks and enter the ranks of the enemies, the Romans and others?" We say, yes, but is this killing themselves? It is not valid killing. Indeed, they are in danger, but there is a possibility of escape. For this reason, they escape. They enter the ranks of the Romans, kill whom Allah wills, and then return to the army.
And likewise, what al-Bara' ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) did in the battle of Yamamah. When they reached the wall of Musaylimah the Liar, they found the door closed and were unable to enter it. Al-Bara' ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) was brave; the brother of Anas ibn Malik was brave. He asked the army to throw him over the wall so he could open the door for them. So they did, throwing him over the wall in order for him to open the door for them so they could enter upon Musaylimah in his fortress. And indeed, he opened the door for them and he was saved.
So it is not possible to use such incidents as evidence for the permissibility of the suicide that these ignorant people do. But we say, we hope from Allah Mighty and Majestic that He will not hold them accountable for what they did, because they did it out of ignorance and good intention. Whoever kills himself with something, he will be punished with it in the Fire of Hell.
And know that it has been reported regarding the one who kills himself with something that he will be punished with it in Hellfire, eternally, abiding in it forever. So the eternity was mentioned. Does that mean he is a disbeliever, because only disbelievers deserve eternal abode? The answer is no, he is not a disbeliever. Rather, he is washed, shrouded, prayed over, and supplicated for forgiveness, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did with the man who killed himself with a spear. He was brought to the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) to pray over him, but he did not pray over him and said:
Send blessings upon him صلوا عليه
So they prayed over him by the command of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). And this indicates that he is not a disbeliever. And in that case, he does not deserve eternal abode as mentioned in the hadith where eternity was mentioned. If the wording is preserved from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), the intended meaning is the severity of the punishment and deterring from this act. Otherwise, he is not a disbeliever.
The third point is that cursing a believer is like killing him. That means if you say to a believer, "May Allah curse you," it is as if you killed him, because cursing is expulsion and distance from the mercy of Allah. And whoever is expelled and distanced from the mercy of Allah becomes like the one who was killed, who lost worldly life. So that one who is expelled and distanced from the mercy of Allah is deprived of the life of the Hereafter, and killing deprives the one killed of worldly life.
And know that cursing a believer is among the major sins, and that it is not permissible. And whoever curses a believer, the curse goes to the one cursed if he is worthy of it, then he has earned it. And if he is not worthy of it, it returns to the one who said it, may Allah protect us from that. So he becomes the one cursed, expelled from the mercy of Allah. And success is from Allah. Yes.
