A man next to me in prayer emits a foul odor; what is the ruling on moving after the opening takbir?
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : In the name of Allah.
Noble Shaykh, if I am standing in congregational prayer and my neighbor is emitting the smell of smoke, am I permitted to change my position after the takbir of intention and stand in another place if I am distressed by this odor?
The Shaykh : If a person stands next to someone who has a foul odor from smoke, onions, garlic, sweat, or something else, and it is difficult for him to perform the prayer in the best manner, he may leave his prayer and go to another place.
However, after clarifying this ruling, we say to everyone who has a foul odor: it is not permissible for him to come to the mosque—may Allah have mercy on you—because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prohibited it. He prohibited one who has eaten onions, garlic, leeks, or anything else with a foul odor from coming to the mosque. In fact, he said:.
And he informed that this harms the angels. When someone came to the mosque of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) having eaten onions or garlic, they would take him out and expel him to al-Baqi'. This indicates that it is not permissible for a person to come to the mosque with an odor that harms the worshippers or the angels, and that the people of the mosque have the right to expel him from the mosque. Yes.
