Prohibition of approaching the mosques for those with a bad smell

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: It is reported in the authentic hadith that one is prohibited from approaching the mosque if he has eaten garlic, onion, or leek. Does this extend to something that has a bad smell and is forbidden, such as smoke? And does this mean that one who consumes these items is excused for missing the congregation, such that he does not sin by missing it?

A: It is established from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:
Whoever eats garlic or onion, let him not approach our mosque, and let him pray in his houseمن أكل ثومًا أو بصلًا فلا يقربن مسجدنا وليصل في بيته
And it is established from him (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:
for the angels are harmed by the same things as the children of Adam.إن الملائكة تتأذى مما يتأذى منه بنو الإنسان
Sahih Muslim 564c
.
And everything that has a bad smell has the same ruling as garlic and onion, such as the smoker, or one who has a smell in his armpits or elsewhere that annoys his companion. It is disliked for him to pray with the congregation, and he is prohibited from doing so until he uses what removes this smell.
And it is obligatory for him to do so, if he is able, so that he performs what Allah has made obligatory upon him, which is prayer in congregation. As for smoking, it is absolutely forbidden, and it is obligatory for him to abandon it at all times; because of the many harms it contains in religion, body, and wealth. May Allah improve the condition of the Muslims and guide them to all good.
