The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful:
The author said (may Allah have mercy on him) in his book *Riyad al-Salihin*: "Chapter on the dislike of a man praying with his hand on his waist":
The waist is the area between the hip and the lower ribs. The person is commanded, when in prayer, to place his right hand over his left forearm, or over the wrist, meaning the area between the palm and the forearm, and to raise them to his chest. This is the recommended practice (sunnah). He should do it this way, either placing the right hand over the forearm or over the wrist, the area between the palm and the forearm. He does this while standing, before bowing and after bowing.
As for placing it on the waist, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade it. It has two forms:
The first form is to place the left or right hand on the waist like this.
The second is to place the right hand over the left and position them like this, as some people do. They claim that by doing this, they place their hands on their heart. This is a mistake. The Shari'ah is not derived from intellect; the Shari'ah is received from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). It is not reported from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he would place his right hand over his left and then put them on his waist. Rather, this falls under the prohibition. And this prohibition is for dislike (makruh), as the author said (may Allah have mercy on him).
