The questioner : May Allah reward you, O honorable Shaykh. The questioner, Muhammad al-Du'ayji from Jeddah, asks in this question: Is it permissible to synchronize with the imam when reciting al-Fatihah, when the imam begins reciting in the prayer and I begin with him?
The Shaykh : It is better not to recite with the imam while he is reciting al-Fatihah; recite when he has finished. This is because when he finishes al-Fatihah, it is usually the case that he pauses for a moment, which may allow the ma'mum to recite half of al-Fatihah before the imam begins the next surah.
Second, if he recites while the imam is reciting the surah after al-Fatihah, he has occupied himself with a recommended practice instead of an obligatory one.
As for if he recites while the imam is reciting al-Fatihah, here he has occupied himself with what is not obligatory instead of what is obligatory. Therefore, we say it is better for the ma'mum not to recite with the imam while he is reciting al-Fatihah, but rather to wait until he finishes.
