The preferred manner for the follower to recite al-Fatihah in prayer
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Honorable Shaykh! Regarding the recitation of al-Fatihah by the follower in prayer, is it done while the imam is reciting his al-Fatihah, or when he enters the surah? And is there a report from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that he paused between reciting al-Fatihah and the surah?
It is preferable for the follower to recite al-Fatihah after the imam has finished reciting it; so that he listens to the obligatory recitation—the pillar—because if he recites al-Fatihah while the imam is reciting al-Fatihah, he will not be listening to the pillar, and his listening will be to what comes after al-Fatihah, which is voluntary. So it is preferable to listen to the recitation of al-Fatihah; because listening to the pillar is more important than listening to the recommended practice. This is from one aspect,And from another aspect: that if the imam says: (and not the astray) and you have not followed along to what you are listening to, you will not say: (Ameen) and in that case you will be separated from the congregation. So this is the preferable course.
As for the pause between reciting al-Fatihah and reciting the surah, it is not reported from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) according to the view of some jurists that the imam pauses so that the follower is able to recite al-Fatihah. Rather, it is a brief pause to catch one's breath from one side, and to open the door for the follower from another side, so that he may begin the recitation and complete it. Even if the imam is reciting, it is a brief pause and not a long one.
