The Ruling on the Fasting of One Who Does Not Pray Except in Ramadan

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: What is the ruling on the fasting of one who does not pray except in Ramadan, or who perhaps fasts but does not pray?
A: Whoever is judged to be a disbeliever, his deeds are invalidated. Allah the Exalted said:
But if they had associated others with Allah, then worthless for them would be whatever they were doing.وَلَوْ أَشْرَكُوا لَحَبِطَ عَنْهُمْ مَا كَانُوا يَعْمَلُونَ
[Al-An'am: 88] And He the Exalted said:
And whoever denies the faith - his work has become worthless, and he, in the Hereafter, will be among the losers.وَمَنْ يَكْفُرْ بِالْإِيمَانِ فَقَدْ حَبِطَ عَمَلُهُ وَهُوَ فِي الْآخِرَةِ مِنَ الْخَاسِرِينَ
[Al-Ma'idah: 5].
A group of scholars held that he does not commit major shirk (associating partners with Allah) if he acknowledges the obligation, but he becomes a disbeliever by way of minor shirk. His deed is uglier and more heinous than the deed of the fornicator and the thief and the like. Nevertheless, his fasting and Hajj are valid according to them if he performs them in a manner in accordance with the Shari'ah. However, his crime is the failure to maintain the prayer, and he is in great danger of falling into major shirk according to a group of scholars. Some of them reported the opinion of the majority that he does not commit major disbelief if he abandons it out of laziness and negligence, but rather he has thereby committed minor disbelief and a great crime and a heinous evil greater than fornication, theft, and undutifulness to parents, and greater than drinking intoxicants. We ask Allah for safety. But the correct and true opinion among the scholars' statements is that he commits major shirk (may Allah keep us safe from it) due to the aforementioned scriptural evidence. So whoever fasts while not praying has no fasting and no Hajj.
