The Ruling in Islam on Performing Surgery to Remove Congenital Deformities
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
From Abdul Aziz ibn Abdullah ibn Baz to the honorable brother Dr. N. A. B., may Allah guide him. Amen.
Peace be upon you, and Allah's mercy and blessings. As for what follows:
Your noble letter has reached me, containing the following questions: What is the religious ruling on performing operations to remove deformities present in a human being, whether resulting from illness, injuries from accidents, or present from birth? This includes removing an extra finger and repairing the area so that the hand appears normal; removing an extra tooth and adjusting the remaining teeth so that the mouth returns to normal; repairing a cleft lip, such as a hare lip, to restore it to normal; removing the scars and deformities resulting from burns; correcting a crooked or large nose that impedes the process of breathing; completing a deficient ear; tightening sagging eyelids that impede vision; tightening sagging facial skin so that the face appears normal; tightening and reducing a large breast in a woman that poses a danger to the spine due to the unbalanced weight from the front; tightening sagging abdominal skin and weak abdominal muscles that may cause a rupture in the internal muscles; correcting the urinary passages in males that may contaminate clothing with urine; removing disfiguring spots on the face; and dissolving fats and oils in obese individuals that may cause many diseases, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and increased fats in the blood? It is known that these operations, when performed, do not result in the deformity ever returning, by the permission of Allah the Exalted. End of quote.
A: There is no harm in treating the aforementioned diseases with lawful medicines, or with permissible medicines from a specialized doctor who is likely to succeed in the operation, due to the generality of the scriptural evidence indicating the permissibility of treating diseases and ailments with lawful or permissible medicines. As for forbidden medicines, such as intoxicants and the like, it is not permissible to treat with them. Among the scriptural evidence for this is the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah 13:3.
And his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):Sahih Muslim 2204 And his saying (peace and blessings be upon him): Sahih Muslim 2199e And his saying (peace and blessings be upon him): Sunan Abi Dawud 3874Da'if (Al-Albani) And his saying (peace and blessings be upon him): Bulugh al-Maram 10:50 There are many hadiths in this meaning. We ask Allah to benefit you, and to grant us and you and all Muslim doctors success in everything that pleases Him and benefits His servants, for He is Generous and Bountiful. And may peace be upon you, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings.

There is a remedy for every malady, and when the remedy is applied to the disease it is cured with the permission of Allah
لكل داء دواء فإذا أصيب دواء الداء برأ بإذن اللهhe who amongst you is competent to do good to his brother should do that
من استطاع منكم أن ينفع أخاه فلينفعهso treat yourselves medically, but use nothing unlawful
عباد الله تداووا، ولا تداووا بحرامAllah did not make your cure in what He made Haram (unlawful) to you.
إن الله لم يجعل شفاءكم فيما حرم عليكم
