The Ruling on Repentance for One Whose End Is Near

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: A man has been afflicted with AIDS, and the doctors have determined that his life expectancy is very short. What is the ruling regarding his repentance at this time?

A: He must hasten to repent, even at the moment of death, because the door of repentance remains open as long as his mind is with him. He must hasten to repent and be cautious of sins. Even if they say his life is short, lifespans are in the hand of Allah, and their assumption may be wrong, and he may live a long time. In any case, it is obligatory to hasten to repent and be sincere in it, so that Allah may accept his repentance. This is based on the saying of Allah the Exalted:
And turn to Allah in repentance, all of you, O believers, that you might succeed.وَتُوبُوا إِلَى اللَّهِ جَمِيعًا أَيُّهَا الْمُؤْمِنُونَ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُفْلِحُونَ
[Surat al-Nur: 31] and His saying:
But indeed, I am the Perpetual Forgiver of whoever repents and believes and does righteousness and then continues in guidance.وَإِنِّي لَغَفَّارٌ لِمَنْ تَابَ وَآمَنَ وَعَمِلَ صَالِحًا ثُمَّ اهْتَدَى
[Surat Ta-Ha: 82] and the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
Indeed Allah accepts the repentance of a slave as long as (his soul does not reach his throat).إن الله يقبل توبة العبد ما لم يغرغر
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 3537Hasan (Darussalam)
The meaning is that this applies as long as the person has not reached the stage of death throes and his consciousness has not departed. And Allah is the One to be sought for help.
