The Authenticity of the Story of the Gharaniq
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: It is mentioned in Tafsir al-Jalalayn regarding the occasion of revelation for verse (52) of Surat al-Hajj: that the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), while reciting: and Manat, the third and the last [Surat al-Najm: 19-20], that Satan threw into his mouth: "Those are the noble Gharaniq, and their intercession is indeed to be hoped for." Is there anything indicating the authenticity of this story from the hadiths of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him)? Or is it from the Isra'iliyyat? Please inform us, may Allah reward you.
A: As far as I know, there is no authentic hadith that can be relied upon regarding the throwing of these words into his recitation (peace and blessings be upon him). However, it was narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in mursal hadiths, as al-Hafiz Ibn Kathir pointed out in his tafsir of the verse from al-Hajj. But the throwing of Satan into his recitation (peace and blessings be upon him) in the verses of al-Najm, which is His saying: the verses, is something established by the text of the verse in Surat al-Hajj, which is His saying, the Exalted: [al-Hajj: 52]. So His saying, the Exalted: [Al-Hajj 22:52] means: he recited. And His saying, the Exalted: [Al-Hajj 22:52] means: in his recitation. Then Allah, the Exalted, abrogates what Satan threw in and clarifies its invalidity in other verses, and He makes His verses firm as a trial and test, as He said, the Exalted, after this: [Al-Hajj 22:53] the verses [al-Hajj: 53].
It is obligatory for every Muslim to beware of what Satan throws in the form of doubts on the tongues of the people of truth and others, and to adhere to the clear truth with clear evidence, and to interpret the ambiguous with the clear, so that no doubt remains upon him, as Allah, the Exalted, said at the beginning of Surat Ali 'Imran: [Ali 'Imran: 7]. And it is authentic from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) from the hadith of A'isha (may Allah be pleased with her) that he said: Sahih Muslim 2665 It is agreed upon as authentic. And success is from Allah.
Have you then considered al-Lat and al-'Uzza?

أَفَرَأَيْتُمُ اللاتَ وَالْعُزَّىAnd We did not send before you any messenger or prophet except that when he spoke [or recited], Satan threw into it [some misunderstanding]. But Allah abolishes that which Satan throws in; then Allah makes precise His verses. And Allah is Knowing and Wise.

[That is] so He may make what Satan throws in a trial for those within whose hearts is disease and those hard of heart
لِيَجْعَلَ مَا يُلْقِي الشَّيْطَانُ فِتْنَةً لِلَّذِينَ فِي قُلُوبِهِمْ مَرَضٌ وَالْقَاسِيَةِ قُلُوبُهُمْIt is obligatory for every Muslim to beware of what Satan throws in the form of doubts on the tongues of the people of truth and others, and to adhere to the clear truth with clear evidence, and to interpret the ambiguous with the clear, so that no doubt remains upon him, as Allah, the Exalted, said at the beginning of Surat Ali 'Imran:
It is He who has sent down to you, [O Muhammad], the Book; in it are verses [that are] precise - they are the foundation of the Book - and others unspecific. As for those in whose hearts is deviation [from truth], they will follow that of it which is unspecific, seeking discord and seeking an interpretation [suitable to them]. And no one knows its [true] interpretation except Allah. But those firm in knowledge say, "We believe in it. All [of it] is from our Lord." And no one will be reminded except those of understanding.
