Ruling on the Persistence of Tattoo Marks on the Body and Gold Teeth
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
From Abdulaziz ibn Abdullah ibn Baz to the honorable brother: Mr. A. (may Allah preserve him). Peace be upon you, and Allah’s mercy and blessings. And after:
I refer to your inquiry registered with the Department of Scholarly Research and Ifta under number (207) and dated 12/1/1409 AH, in which you ask about the ruling on the persistence of tattoo marks on a person’s body after he has become aware of their prohibition, as well as the persistence of a gold tooth that a Muslim had installed while ignorant of the ruling, and whether removing it after he learned of the prohibition would leave a gap in his mouth?
A: I inform you that tattooing the body is forbidden; for what is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):Sunan Ibn Majah 1987Sahih (Darussalam). If a Muslim did it while ignorant of the prohibition, or had the tattoo done while he was a minor, he is obligated to remove it after he learns of the prohibition. However, if its removal entails hardship or harm, repentance and seeking forgiveness suffice for him, and its remaining on his body does not harm him.
As for installing a gold tooth without need, it is not permissible; due to the prohibition of gold for men, unless there is a dire necessity. You stated in your question that you had it done for the sake of adornment, so you are obligated to remove it. You can install something in its place from the types that are permissible other than gold. May Allah guide everyone to what He is pleased with. And peace be upon you, and Allah’s mercy and blessings.

the Prophet cursed the woman who does hair extensions and the one who has that done, and the woman who does tattoos and the one who has that done.
