The Ruling on Reciting the Qur'an in the Manner of Singers
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: What is your opinion, Your Eminence, regarding a reciter of the Qur'an who uses maqamat (melodic modes) that are similar to the maqamat of singing? In fact, they are taken from them? Please inform us of this. May Allah reward you with good.
A: It is not permissible for a believer to recite the Qur'an with the melodies of singing and the manner of singers. Rather, it is obligatory for him to recite it as our righteous predecessors, the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and those who followed them with excellence, recited it. He should recite it in a measured, solemn, and humble manner, so that it affects the hearts of those who hear it and so that he himself is affected by it. As for reciting it in the manner of singers and in their style, this is not permissible.
