The Ruling on Taking a Fee for Shaving Beards
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: Some barbershop owners shave the beards of some people. What is the ruling on the money they take for this work?
A: Shaving and trimming beards is forbidden and a clear evil. It is not permissible for a Muslim to do it or to assist in it, and taking a fee for it is forbidden and illicit. It is obligatory for whoever does this to repent to Allah from it and not to return to it, and to give in charity what he gained from it, if he knows Allah’s (Glorified and Exalted is He) ruling on the prohibition of shaving beards. If he was ignorant, there is no blame on him for what has passed, and he should be cautious of it in the future. This is based on the saying of Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) regarding the consumption of usury or interest: [Surat al-Baqarah: 275].
In the two Sahihs, it is narrated from Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him and his father), from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), that he said:. In Sahih al-Bukhari, it is narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said: . In Sahih Muslim, it is narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) , from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), that he said: Sahih Muslim 260. Therefore, it is obligatory for every Muslim to obey Allah’s command by letting his beard grow and keeping it, and trimming his moustache and shortening it. A Muslim should not be deceived by the large number of people who contradict this Sunnah and openly defy their Lord with disobedience.
We ask Allah to guide the Muslims to everything that brings Him pleasure, and to help them in obeying Him and obeying His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), and to bestow upon those who contradict the command of Allah and His Messenger sincere repentance to their Lord, and to hasten to obey Him and follow His command and the command of His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). Indeed, He is All-Hearing, Near.
