The Ruling on Shaving or Trimming the Beard

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The fifth question - in the letter of the brother Sa'd Musa al-Suwayriq al-Salahi - he says: What is the ruling on one who shaves his beard, and is there any Quranic evidence for that? Please inform us, may Allah reward you with good.
Answer: Shaving the beard or trimming it is entirely forbidden and prohibited. It is not permissible for a Muslim to trim his beard or to shave it, based on what is established from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:
Cut your mustaches short and let your beards grow, and be distinct from the polytheists.
Thus said the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in what is authentic from him, narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim in the two Sahihs from the hadith of Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both). He also said (peace and blessings be upon him):
Trim closely the moustache, and grow beard, and thus act against the fire-worshippers.
Sahih Muslim 260
And in another wording:
And let the beards grow
Narrated by Muslim in the Sahih. This indicates the obligation to let the beard grow, to honor it, to preserve it, and to let it hang down. In the text of the Noble Quran, Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) says: :
He who obeys the Messenger has obeyed Allah
[An-Nisa: 80], and He says (Glorified and Exalted is He) in another noble verse:
And whatever the Messenger has given you - take; and what he has forbidden you - refrain from. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is severe in penalty.
[Al-Hashr: 7], and He says (Glorified and Exalted is He):
So let those beware who dissent from the Prophet's order
[An-Nur 24:63]
meaning: He commanded the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)
That a trial may befall them, or a painful punishment
[An-Nur: 63]. This is a great warning for whoever disobeys the command of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).
So it is obligatory upon the Ummah to follow the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), to obey his command, and to leave what he forbade. This is the obligation of the entire Ummah. And it is established from him (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:
All my followers will enter Paradise except those who refuse." They said, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! Who will refuse?" He said, "Whoever obeys me will enter Paradise, and whoever disobeys me is the one who refuses (to enter it)."كل أمتي يدخلون الجنة إلا من أبى، قيل: يا رسول الله! من يأبى؟ قال: من أطاعني دخل الجنة، ومن عصاني فقد أبى
Sahih al-Bukhari 7280
Narrated by al-Bukhari.
So my advice to all Muslims everywhere is to preserve their beards, to honor them, to let them hang down, and to beware of shaving or trimming them. They should not imitate those among the people today who do that, for many people do that today. So it is not befitting for a believer to imitate those who do that, but rather they should take upon themselves the command of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and obey him (peace and blessings be upon him), let their beards grow, and honor them in obedience to Allah and following His Shari'ah. And success is from Allah. The presenter: May Allah reward you.
