Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: A question from: Ibrahim A. H. He says: Sometimes I remember a nocturnal emission after I wake up from sleep, but I do not see any trace of that emission. Is the ritual bath obligatory for me or not? Please issue a ruling for us, may Allah reward you with good.
A: The ritual bath is not obligatory for one who sees a nocturnal emission unless he finds the water, which is: semen; due to the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): And its meaning is: that the water for the bath is from the water of semen, and this is the view of the scholars regarding the one who has a nocturnal emission. However, if he has intercourse with his wife, then the ritual bath is obligatory upon him, even if no water comes out of him; due to the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): Muwatta Malik 2:72 Narrated by Muslim in his Sahih. And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Sahih al-Bukhari 291 It is agreed upon that it is authentic. Muslim added in his Sahih: .
And in the two Sahihs, from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), that Umm Sulaym al-Ansariyyah – who is the mother of Anas (may Allah be pleased with them both) – said: O Messenger of Allah, indeed Allah is not shy of the truth, so is there a ritual bath for a woman if she has a nocturnal emission? So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Jami` at-Tirmidhi 122Sahih (Darussalam).
And this ruling encompasses men and women according to all the scholars. And included in this meaning is: one who releases semen due to desire; through thinking or touching, for it is obligatory upon him to perform the ritual bath, like the one who has a nocturnal emission if he releases; due to the generality of his (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: And success is from Allah.
