The Ruling on Obeying One’s Father in Shaving the Beard
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
From Abdulaziz ibn Abdullah ibn Baz to the honorable brother: M. J. B. A. – may Allah grant him success – Peace be upon you, and Allah’s mercy and blessings. As for what follows:
Your letter – may Allah guide you – has reached me, containing: a request for an answer to two questions:
The first is: regarding the ruling on your obedience to your father in shaving the beard. In answer to the first question:
A: I inform you: that it is not permissible for you to obey your father in shaving the beard; rather, it is obligatory to grow it and let it hang down; due to the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):Sunan an-Nasa'i 15Sahih (Darussalam), and his saying (peace and blessings be upon him): Sunan Abi Dawud 2625Sahih (Al-Albani).
Letting the beard hang down is obligatory, not a recommended practice according to the jurisprudential terminology; because the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded it, and the default ruling for a command is obligation, and there is no factor that diverts from this.
