The Ruling on Fiddling and Excessive Movement in Prayer

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: Many people engage in a lot of fiddling and movement during prayer. Is there a specific limit of movement that invalidates the prayer? Is there a basis for defining it as three consecutive movements? And what do you advise those who engage in much fiddling during prayer?

A: It is obligatory for the believing man and woman to be calm and composed in prayer and to refrain from fiddling, because being calm and composed is one of the pillars of prayer, as established in the two Sahihs from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)
That he ordered the one who did not be calm and composed in his prayer to repeat the prayerأنه أمر الذي لم يطمئن في صلاته أن يعيد الصلاة
. It is prescribed for every Muslim man and woman to be humble in prayer, to devote themselves to it, and to be present in heart before Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He), as Allah (the Exalted) said: :
(1) Certainly will the believers have succeeded: (2) They who are during their prayer humbly submissiveقَدْ أَفْلَحَ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ * الَّذِينَ هُمْ فِي صَلَاتِهِمْ خَاشِعُونَ
[Al-Mu’minun: 1-2]. It is disliked for him to fiddle with his clothes, his beard, or anything else. If the fiddling becomes excessive and continuous, it becomes forbidden and invalidates the prayer.
As far as we know from the pure Shari'ah, there is no specific limit for this. The claim that it is defined by three movements is a weak statement with no evidence for it. The relied-upon criterion is that it is considered excessive fiddling in the opinion of the one praying.
So if the one praying believes that his fiddling is excessive and has become continuous, he must repeat the prayer if it was an obligatory prayer. And he must repent from that.
My advice to every Muslim man and woman is to take care of the prayer, to be humble in it, and to refrain from fiddling in it, even if it is little, because of the great status of the prayer, its being the pillar of Islam and the greatest of its pillars after the two testimonies, and it being the first thing for which the servant will be held accountable on the Day of Resurrection. May Allah guide the Muslims to perform it in the manner that pleases Him (Glorified and Exalted is He).
