The ruling on praying behind a Sufi who does not fold his hands in prayer
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: If you are in a village and its imam is one of the Sufis, and he does not fold his hands in prayer, nor does he place his knees before his hands when going into prostration, is my prayer behind him permissible or not?
A: If he is a monotheist known for his tawhid (the oneness of Allah), not a mushrik (one who associates partners with Allah), but rather has some ignorance and Sufism, yet he is a monotheist Muslim who worships Allah alone and does not worship the shaykhs or call upon them besides Allah, like Shaykh Abdul Qadir or others, but worships Allah alone, then there is no harm in praying behind him. And the mere fact that he does not fold his hands does not prevent praying behind him, because folding the hands is a recommended practice (sunnah) and not obligatory.
And the sunnah (recommended practice) is to place the right hand over the left palm and put them on the chest, so that the right hand is above the left palm, wrist, and forearm. This is the best, and this is what is preserved from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). It was narrated by Abu Dawud, al-Nasa'i, and others from the hadith of Wa'il ibn Hujr (may Allah be pleased with him) . And a corroborating narration came from Imam Ahmad (may Allah have mercy on him) in his Musnad with a good chain from the hadith of Qabisa ibn Hulb al-Tai from his father (may Allah be pleased with him) : This is the best due to the two hadiths mentioned. And al-Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated in his Sahih from the hadith of Sahl ibn Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) what indicates this meaning, except that he said: on his left forearm instead of his left palm.
And the meaning, and Allah knows best, is that the tips of his right fingers were on his left forearm near the palm, combining the hadiths. But whoever lets them hang down, his prayer is valid, but he has contradicted the sunnah in that.
As for placing the knees before the hands in prostration, it is the best due to the hadith of Wa'il ibn Hujr (may Allah be pleased with him) regarding that and what came in its meaning. And it is the opinion of the majority of the scholars.
And some said: place the hands before the knees, due to what came in that regard in the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) .
And the matter in this is broad, whether one places the knees first or the hands first, the prayer is valid. The disagreement is only about what is best, and the correct view is that the best is to place the knees before the hands, as mentioned earlier. And if one places the hands first and then the knees, there is no harm in that, and the prayer is valid, and praise be to Allah. And there is no obstacle to praying behind one who does that.
And the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) regarding the prohibition of the one praying from prostrating like the prostration of a camel does not contradict the hadith of Wa'il, but rather agrees with it; because the camel prostrates on its hands before its legs.
As for his saying at the end of the hadith of Abu Hurayrah:Sunan Abi Dawud 840Sahih (Al-Albani) The most apparent view among many of the meticulous scholars is that it is an error from some of the narrators, and the correct version is: so that the end of the hadith agrees with its beginning.
With that, the two hadiths, the hadith of Wa'il and the hadith of Abu Hurayrah, agree, and the disagreement is resolved. And Allah is the guarantor of success.
