The Ruling on One Who Says: The Prophets Did Not Realize the Oneness of Allah

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
From 'Abd al-'Aziz ibn 'Abd Allah ibn Baz to the honorable brother, the virtuous Shaykh: 'A, S, 'A, G. May Allah guide him to what brings Him pleasure and increase him in knowledge and faith. Amen. Peace be upon you, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. As for what follows:
I have received the letter addressed to your eminence from the brother in Allah, S, S, H, containing the question about the ruling on one who says: The Prophets need to be taught that there is no deity but Allah, and the ruling on one who says: The Prophets did not realize the oneness of Allah, and your eminence's desire, through your representative, for an answer to the question.

And the answer: There is no doubt that the Prophets and Messengers, and others among the scholars, need to be reminded by their Lord, Exalted is He, of the virtue of tawhid (the oneness of Allah) and righteous deeds; because knowledge in all its types—meaning Islamic knowledge—is only received from Allah, Exalted is He, and it is He who sends the Messengers, Exalted and Glorified is He, and teaches them what they did not know, so that they may convey His messages to His servants. As Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said to His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in Surat al-Nisa:
And if it was not for the favor of Allah upon you, [O Muhammad], and His mercy, a group of them would have determined to mislead you. But they do not mislead except themselves, and they will not harm you at all. And Allah has revealed to you the Book and wisdom and has taught you that which you did not know. And ever has the favor of Allah upon you been great.
[al-Nisa: 113] And He, Exalted is He, said in Surat al-Ma'idah:
[Be warned of] the Day when Allah will assemble the messengers and say, "What was the response you received?" They will say, "We have no knowledge. Indeed, it is You who is Knower of the unseen"يَوْمَ يَجْمَعُ اللَّهُ الرُّسُلَ فَيَقُولُ مَاذَا أُجِبْتُمْ قَالُوا لا عِلْمَ لَنَا إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ عَلامُ الْغُيُوبِ ۝
[Al-Ma'idah 5:109]
WHEN ALLAH SAYS, O JESUS, SON OF MARYAM, RECALL MY FAVOR TOWARD YOU AND TOWARD YOUR MOTHER, WHEN I SUPPORTED YOU WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT, SO YOU SPOKE TO THE PEOPLE IN THE CRADLE AND IN OLD AGE, AND WHEN I TAUGHT YOU THE SCRIPTURE AND WISDOM AND THE TORAH AND THE GOSPEL the verses [al-Ma'idah: 109 - 110].
And the verses in this meaning are many. Among them is the hadith of Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:
Moses said, "O my Lord, teach me something by which I may remember You and supplicate to You." He said, "Say, O Moses, there is no deity but Allah."قال موسى يا رب علمني شيئا أذكرك وأدعوك به قال قل يا موسى لا إله إلا الله
The hadith was narrated by Ibn Hibban and al-Hakim, as in the book al-Tawhid, but they do not need for people to teach them; rather, they are the ones who teach people from what Allah taught them, peace and blessings be upon him. And whoever claims that the Prophets need for people to teach them is a disbeliever, misguided, and one who belittles the Prophets. Likewise, whoever says: The Prophets did not realize the oneness of Allah, is a disbeliever, misguided, and one who belittles the Prophets and accuses them of what they are innocent of, peace and blessings be upon them. Rather, they are the ones who teach people the reality of tawhid (the oneness of Allah) and all the rulings of the Shari'ah (Islamic sacred law) with which they were sent. The most perfect among them in that, and the highest in rank, is their seal, our Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him and upon them). This is something not hidden from one like you, and the scholars have stated it explicitly in the chapter on the ruling of the apostate. But due to your desire for information, as mentioned by your representative, this has been written.
And I ask Allah to grant me and you and all our brothers understanding in His religion and steadfastness upon it, and to support His religion and elevate His word, and to rectify the conditions of all the Muslims and grant them understanding in the religion, and to rectify their leaders, and to enable their scholars to fulfill what is obligatory upon them of calling to Allah, Exalted is He, and conveying His Shari'ah (Islamic sacred law) to His servants. Indeed, He is the All-Hearing, the Near.
And peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah and His blessings.
