The Merit of Completing the Recitation of the Qur'an in Ramadan
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: Can the recitation of the Qur'an by Jibril (peace be upon him) to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in Ramadan be used to derive the virtue of completing a recitation of the Qur'an?
A: From this, the practice of mutual recitation is derived, and it is recommended for the believer to recite the Qur'an with someone who benefits and profits him; because the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) recited with Jibril for the sake of benefit; because Jibril is the one who comes from Allah (Mighty and Majestic), and he is the messenger between Allah and the messengers, so Jibril must have benefited the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with things from the side of Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) from the side of establishing the letters of the Qur'an, and from the side of its meanings that Allah intended. So if a person recites with one who helps him to understand the Qur'an and one who helps him to establish its words, this is required, just as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited with Jibril.
The intention is not that Jibril is better than the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), but Jibril is the messenger who came from Allah, so he conveys to the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) what Allah commanded him regarding the Qur'an, its words, and its meanings. So the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) benefits from Jibril in this respect, not that Jibril is better than him (peace and blessings be upon him); rather, he is the best of mankind, and better than the angels (peace and blessings be upon him). But mutual recitation contains much good for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and for the community; because it is a recitation of what comes from Allah, and to benefit from what comes from Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) .
And in it is another benefit: that mutual recitation at night is better than during the day; because this mutual recitation was at night, and it is known that the night is closer to the gathering and presence of the heart, and the benefit is greater than mutual recitation during the day.
And in it is also among the benefits: the lawfulness of mutual recitation, and that it is a righteous deed, even if it is not in Ramadan; because there is benefit in it for each of them, and if they are more than two, there is no harm. Each of them benefits from his brother and encourages him to read and energizes him. Perhaps he would not be energized if he sat alone, but if he has a companion with whom he recites or companions, that would be more encouraging for him and more energizing for him, along with the great benefit in what occurs between them of studying and reviewing what may be difficult for them. All of this contains much good.
And it can be understood from this that reading the Qur'an completely by the imam to the congregation in Ramadan is a type of this mutual recitation; because in this there is benefit for them regarding the entire Qur'an. For this reason, Imam Ahmad (may Allah have mercy on him) loved for the one who leads them to complete the recitation of the Qur'an with them. And this is of the kind of the action of the Salaf in loving to hear the entire Qur'an. But this is not a reason to hasten and not be deliberate in his reading, nor to seek humility and tranquility, rather seeking these matters is more important than considering the completion of the recitation.
