Question:
Is the sunnah of the midday prayer before it or after it? And is it two or four? Please inform us, may Allah reward you.
Answer:
It is established from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that he used to pray ten rak'ahs in the day and night, and he was consistent with them: two before the midday prayer, two after it, two after the sunset prayer, two after the night prayer, and two before the dawn prayer. The two Shaykhs narrated it in "al-Sahihayn" from the hadith of Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both).
And it is established from 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)Riyad as-Salihin 1114 Al-Bukhari narrated it in "al-Sahih".
So it is better for the believing man and woman to pray four rak'ahs before the midday prayer and two after it; due to the hadith of 'A'ishah mentioned. And if he prays four after the midday prayer along with four before it, that is better; for what Imam Ahmad and the authors of the four Sunan narrated with a good chain from Umm Habibah (may Allah be pleased with her) from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) who said:Jami` at-Tirmidhi 428Sahih (Darussalam).
And this is a great virtue, and these are called the rawatib, and they are mentioned in his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):Sahih Muslim 728a Muslim narrated it from Umm Habibah, and al-Tirmidhi narrated it with a good chain, and added: Sunan an-Nasa'i 1794Hasan (Darussalam).
