Shaving the beard: Is there a discretionary punishment for it, and likewise for shaving the mustache?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : Is there a discretionary punishment for shaving the beard and the mustache?

The Shaykh : Is it a sin?

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : Yes, a discretionary punishment is obligatory for it.

The questioner : What about the mustache?

The Shaykh : No, not for the mustache, because it is not a sin. He asks: Is a discretionary punishment obligatory for shaving the beard? Yes, it is obligatory, because it involves abandoning an obligation of the Messenger. He said:
and let them grow them وفروا
We repeat this discretionary punishment every time he shaves, yes, every time he shaves we repeat it. As for shaving the mustache, the correct view is that its doer is not disciplined, meaning he is not subjected to a discretionary punishment, even though some scholars said that the doer should be disciplined. However, there is some hesitation about this. Those who said he should be disciplined said that shaving the mustache is analogous to shaving the beard, and this is correct.

The questioner : ... rather than shaving.

The Shaykh : Yes, yes, he is subjected to a discretionary punishment, because it goes against the command of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Some scholars said that as long as its length is not considered ugly, meaning as long as it is not excessively long to the point that people find it ugly, and some said that if it exceeds a handful, it may be taken. But when we look at the generality of the hadiths, we find that they are general.

The questioner : Some people might find it ugly...

The Shaykh : No, no, the intended meaning is the general public or the average people. As for some people who find it ugly even if it remains the length of a finger, yes.

The questioner : ... .

The Shaykh : Is the discretionary punishment obligatory or a recommended practice? If it is a recommended practice, then there is no harm!

The questioner : If the one in authority sees that it is not obligatory.
