Examples of the harms of free mixing

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : And listen now to that example: In the Noble Qur'an, the Lord of the Worlds says:
And We have already known the preceding [generations] among you, and We have already known the later [ones to come]. وَلَقَدْ عَلِمْنَا الْمُسْتَقْدِمِينَ مِنْكُمْ وَلَقَدْ عَلِمْنَا الْمُسْتَأْخِرِينَ
[Al-Hijr 15:24]
. This verse was revealed concerning a man from among the Companions. Where are they, and where are we?! He used to deliberately pray in the last row because he would see a woman praying in the first row, so whenever he prostrated, he would look like this.
The student : This was from the time of our Shaykh.

The Shaykh : And if humans are humans, but they differ, so Allah sent down a correction for him and those like him:
And We have already known the preceding [generations] among you, and We have already known the later [ones to come]. وَلَقَدْ عَلِمْنَا الْمُسْتَقْدِمِينَ مِنْكُمْ وَلَقَدْ عَلِمْنَا الْمُسْتَأْخِرِينَ
[Al-Hijr 15:24]
. - And upon you be peace, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. - And the examples regarding the matter of blocking the means to harm are many, and very many. Among them is what Shaykh Ali mentioned just now. And although this means it may not be a settled, permanent ruling that
And their homes are better for them. وبيوتهنَّ خيرٌ لهنَّ
this is the case as a general rule, but sometimes the mosque may be better for them because of the knowledge, the admonition, the remembrance, and so on. And with this, it is explained why the women in the time of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), and they knew what we know of this hadith and its like, nevertheless used to attend the mosque of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) to hear the remembrance, the admonition, the advice, and the knowledge that might not be realized for them in the privacy of their homes. But the examples we have presented are very important if we now look at what they unjustly, oppressively, and transgressively call "the university campus." We measure this university by these places, the mosques. So if the Wise Lawgiver, through His Noble Prophet, kept the breaths of men and women apart in this precise arrangement, how can He permit men and women to gather in one hall? Even if some of them want to treat Islam as it is said in some tongues, in some places, with half-solutions: they present the youth and say it is somewhat obstructive, but he does not want to study at the university because there is free mixing there. And she said to me: "We girls are behind the young men." The important thing is that this lagging behind is not as it is in prayer, where the last row of the young men might be followed by the first row of the women. It is not this far gap! Then the greatest problem comes when they go out to the open area, "the university campus." Yes, here the matter becomes as they say in our region in Syria: "the mixture is mixed." And gathering under the canopies and the green trees, and so on. And add to that the immoral guidance that exists as a subject taught at the university. There is no supervision of the young men and young women guiding them to Islamic morals and what Islam commanded of lowering the gaze, and so on. This is in the university, so what about in the offices?
The Shaykh : Therefore, the answer we say is: If there is a school exclusively for girls, and the teachers teach the girls, and there are no men who mix with the teachers or the girls, and this, to my knowledge, does not exist, then if such a thing is found, it is permissible, with the known condition that the teachers and the female teachers be in their lawful clothing. And in my opinion, I say this is a fantasy that completely contradicts reality. Therefore, I do not advise a man who has a wife, or a man who has a sister, or a man who has a daughter, to permit them to teach or study in such mixed societies of women and men. And the matter is as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said in the authentic hadith, which is known to you, and the point of it is:
is like a shepherd who pastures (his animals) near the Hima (private pasture) of someone else and at any moment he is liable to get in it ومَن حام حول الحمى يوشكُ أن يقعَ فيه
Bulugh al-Maram 16:32
. So let no one say, "No, my wife is noble and pure, and so on." Because she, like the husband, is not protected from sin, and he is not protected from sin. And the one who deceives himself, then "Marrakesh has fallen upon itself." Likewise, he should not have a good opinion of his sister or his daughter. This is what I testify to Allah.
The student : May Allah bless you, our Shaykh. The matter is truly important. When the Muslims fell into this evil, which is the evil of free mixing, or rather, I mean: imitation in general.

The Shaykh : That is correct.
The student : When they fell into it, they fell where the disbelievers had grown weary of this evil that they were in.

The Shaykh : Allahu Akbar, yes, indeed.
The student : They ended, meaning they did not have anything more to add to it, so it became imitation of the disbelievers. As it is said: "The Muslims began in evil where the disbelievers ended." So the effects that the imitation of the disbelievers has caused or will cause will be much worse than the effects that came from the bad decisions and their falling into the causes of the evil they fell into. And this is a matter that people rarely pay attention to, because the beginning is worse than the beginning of the disbelievers, and therefore their effects must be much worse than the effects that followed the evil.
The student : The distance is short.
The student: Yes.
