What is the meaning of the connected and the disconnected exception?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The student: Is it possible to provide further clarification regarding the disconnected and the connected exception?

The Shaykh : Yes.
The student: Because it is frequent in the Qur'an.

The Shaykh : Yes, the connected exception is what is of the same kind as the thing from which the exception is made, and the disconnected exception is what is not of its kind. The kind may be identical in essence, or it may be conceptual. It may be identical in essence, for example: "The people stood up except a horse." These people are specific individuals and the horse is a specific individual, and the horse is not of their kind. It may be conceptual, for example, the saying of the Exalted:
Indeed, My servants - no authority will you have over them, except those who follow you of the deviators. إن عبادي ليس لك عليهم سلطان إلا من اتبعك من الغاويين
[Al-Hijr 15:42]
according to the opinion of those who say that the intended meaning of "My servants" here is servants in the specific sense of servitude, meaning: "My believing servants, you have no authority over them." So if it is said:
except those who follow you إلا من اتبعك
[Al-Hijr 15:42]
then whoever follows you is not of the same kind as the believers, whether in terms of their essence or in terms of their description; these are believers and these are not believers. So this is a disconnected exception. Thus, the disconnected exception is when the exception is not of the same kind as the thing from which the exception is made, whether it is not of the same kind in its essence or not of the same kind in its description. That is it. Yes?
The student: What is the meaning of "not disconnected"?

The Shaykh : It means that it is disconnected from what came before it, it is not connected to it, because this is of one kind and this is of another kind.
The student: He says from the perspective of rulings.

The Shaykh : Yes, yes, it is there, there is the grammatical case and the rulings, because he says
Indeed, My servants - no authority will you have over them, except those who follow you إن عبادي ليس لك عليهم سلطان إلا من اتبعك
[Al-Hijr 15:42]
If we take "My servants" to mean the general sense of servitude, as in the saying of the Exalted:
There is no one in the heavens and earth but that he comes to the Most Merciful as a servant. إن كل من السماوات والأرض إلا آتي الرحمن عبدًا
[Maryam 19:93]
we say the exception is connected, because "My servants" includes the believer and the disbeliever, so
except those who follow you إلا من اتبعك
[Al-Hijr 15:42]
is connected. If we say that
My servants عبادي
refers only to the believers, then what comes after "except" is not of the same kind as what came before it, so this becomes a disconnected exception. This is the rule.
