The Shaykh’s clarification of the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) status regarding forgetfulness, and that it is obligatory to take a middle path in this matter between the exaggeration of the extremists and the negligence of the neglecters.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : So, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forgets by virtue of being human, but above all, his forgetfulness is not like our forgetfulness. This is a reality that a Muslim must believe in Allah. We forget and thereby sin, whereas he forgets and is rewarded. Why? Because knowing some of the rulings of the Shari'ah resulted from his forgetfulness, as in the incidents I mentioned to you earlier. The point is that the Muslim must be moderate:
And thus we have made you a just community وَكَذَلِكَ جَعَلْنَاكُمْ أُمَّةً وَسَطًا
[Al-Baqarah 2:143]
. One does not elevate the Messenger (peace be upon him) in a way that contradicts his saying:
Do not elevate me above the status in which Allah placed me لا ترفعوني فوق منزلتي التي أنزَلَني الله فيها
As-Sunan al-Kubra lil-Nasa'i 64:726
. Nor does one say, "My brother, the Messenger is a human like us." No, we do not say that the Messenger is as al-Busiri and others like him said:
"Muhammad is a human, not like other humans *** Rather, he is a ruby, and people are like stones"
This is exaggeration, just as he exaggerated in his saying:
"Leave what the Christians claimed about their prophet *** And judge as you wish in praising him and seek his judgment"
No, we are moderate, for our Lord has stamped us with His noble stamp. So we do not elevate the Messenger (peace be upon him) above the status in which Allah placed him, nor do we place him in the rank of ordinary people. Allah chose him for prophethood and messengership first, then He chose him to be the master of all prophets and messengers.
