The Meaning of the Verse: {And do not take the name of Allah as an excuse for your oaths}

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
The saying of Allah the Exalted:
And do not make [your oath by] Allah an excuseوَلَا تَجْعَلُوا اللَّهَ عُرْضَةً لِأَيْمَانِكُمْ
[al-Baqarah:224]?

Answer:
It means: Do not swear by Allah to prevent yourselves from what Allah has prescribed for you. Do not make oaths an excuse that prevents you from good.
Therefore, He said after that:
being righteous and fearing Allahأَنْ تَبَرُّوا وَتَتَّقُوا
[al-Baqarah:224], meaning: Do not make oaths prevent you from good. For example, “By Allah, I will not support my parents,” “By Allah, I will not maintain ties with my relatives,” “By Allah, I will not visit so-and-so who is sick,” or “By Allah, I will not pray the Duha prayer.” All of this is wrong. One should expiate for the oath and do the good.
