The Ruling on Love Poetry

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
A letter from al-Dhahran, sent by the listener Sa'd al-Qahtani, asking and saying: Is it permissible to write love poetry? Or is it permissible to read it? And what is the standard of modesty in the Shari'ah? May Allah reward you with good.

Answer:
Any poetry that calls to lewdness and what is wrong, whether it is called love poetry or not, or that calls to any of the forbidden things; it is not permissible to write it, nor to read it to people, nor to engage with it; because it is among that which diverts from the path of Allah, and among that which encourages lewdness, and it is idle talk, the evil that Allah has censured and criticized in His saying, the Exalted:
And of the people is he who buys the amusement of speech to mislead [others] from the way of Allah without knowledgeوَمِنَ النَّاسِ مَنْ يَشْتَرِي لَهْوَ الْحَدِيثِ لِيُضِلَّ عَنْ سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ بِغَيْرِ عِلْمٍ
[Luqman: 6]. Most of the exegetes have held that idle talk is forbidden singing, and what follows it in the form of instruments of amusement—may Allah keep us safe—yes.

The presenter : May Allah reward you with good.
