The Ruling on Reciting and Memorizing Poetry

I ask, may Allah reward you with good, about the ruling on reciting poetry and memorizing it, knowing that I do not like erotic poetry and I hate it?
Answer: Poetry is of two kinds. If it is in wisdom, admonitions, and benefits, there is nothing wrong with it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, some poetry is wisdom." And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) heard the poetry of Hassan and others from the Companions; so there is nothing wrong with it, on the condition that one does not overdo it and that it does not occupy him from what is more important. As for if the poetry is in corruption and calling to lewd acts, then this is not permissible, rather it is what is wrong. Likewise, lewd songs or with instruments of amusement, all of it is what is wrong, with the tanbur, with the oud, with the violin, with music, it is not permissible. The believer should be cautious of these things and beware of them, and Allah is the One to be sought for help. Yes.
