The Meaning of the Statement: “O Allah, do not deal with us by Your justice”

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
How do you reconcile these two phrases in the supplication: “Your decree is just with us” and “do not deal with us by Your justice”?

Answer:
It means seeking pardon. That is, Allah’s decree is just and He is not unjust, but His pardon is better; it is better that He pardons. Therefore, if one seeks pardon and asks that he not be dealt with by His justice but rather by His pardon for any slips that may occur, there is nothing wrong with that. Indeed, He, Glorified and Exalted is He, is Pardoning and loves to pardon. This is why, when Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said:
O Messenger of Allah! If I were to encounter the Night of Decree, what should I say in it? He said: Say: O Allah, You are Pardoning and You love to pardon, so pardon me.يا رسول الله! إن وافقت ليلة القدر ما أقول فيها؟ قال: قولي: اللهم إنك عفو تحب العفو فاعف عني
As-Sunan al-Kubra lil-Nasa'i 64:1287
He, Glorified and Exalted is He, loves to pardon and is a Pardoning, Generous Lord. So if the believer asks Him to deal with him by His pardon rather than His justice, this request means: that He should pardon him for any slips that may occur, which, if He were to deal with him by His justice, He would punish him for. Yes.
