The Limits of a Woman's Awrah in the Presence of Non-Mahrams, Women, and in Prayer

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
What is the Shari'ah-prescribed hijab for a woman? Is it permissible to uncover the face and hands, or is it not?

Answer:
A woman is entirely an awrah in the presence of a non-mahram; she must cover her entire body, including the face and hands, and everything else is awrah. However, in her home and in the presence of women, there is nothing wrong with uncovering her face, hands, head, or foot; there is nothing wrong in the presence of women. In prayer, she uncovers her face; it is the recommended practice (sunnah) to uncover the face in prayer, provided she is praying when there is no non-mahram present. As for the hands, it is better to cover them, and if she uncovers them, the prayer is valid, but it is better to cover them to avoid scholarly disagreement. As for the feet, it is obligatory to cover them in prayer according to the majority of scholars. However, if a non-mahram can see her, she must cover her face and her entire body. Yes.
