Question:
A listener, an Egyptian residing in the Kingdom, asks a number of questions. In one of them, he says: What is the ruling on praying in a mosque that contains a shrine, knowing that this shrine is behind the worshippers, not in front of them, and between the worshippers and this shrine is a barrier made of a glass panel?
Answer:
Mosques that contain graves are not to be prayed in, whether the grave is in front of the worshippers, to their right, to their left, or behind them. All mosques built over graves are not to be prayed in, based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):Sahih Muslim 529 And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Sahih Muslim 532 Therefore, it is not permissible to pray in them at all; the prayer in them is invalid.
Therefore, it is obligatory for the believer to be cautious of this in any country. No mosque built over a grave is to be prayed in, absolutely.
As for the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) mosque, it was not built over a grave. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was buried in his house, not in the mosque. However, when al-Walid ibn ‘Abd al-Malik, the Commander of the Faithful at that time in the last part of the first century, expanded the mosque, he included the chamber containing the grave in the mosque. It is not part of the mosque, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) was not buried in the mosque; rather, he was buried in his house. The chamber was included in the mosque due to the expansion, and then what distinguishes it from the mosque and excludes it from the mosque was placed over it. Therefore, its presence in the mosque does not harm the worshippers in the mosque; because it is in his house, adjacent to the mosque, and not in the mosque. So, there is no harm in praying in the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) mosque, and there is nothing wrong with it.
As for the graves that are buried in the mosque intentionally, or over which a grave is established; these are the place of prohibition and the place of warning. They are the ones whose owners the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) cursed. We ask Allah for safety. Yes.

لعن الله اليهود والنصارى اتخذوا قبور أنبيائهم مساجدBeware of those who preceded you and used to take the graves of their prophets and righteous men as places of worship, but you must not take graves as mosques; I forbid you to do that.
