Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
He asks Your Eminence, saying: What is the ruling regarding an imam who smokes, lets his garments hang below the ankles, and shaves his beard, or trims his beard leaving only a little of it, like a mark indicating a beard? What is the ruling on his leading people in prayer? I hope for information for him, for us, and for all those like us? May Allah reward you with good.
Answer:
These matters are sins. Shaving the beard is a sin, and trimming it is likewise; because the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said: .
Similarly, smoking is not permissible because of the great harms it contains. Similarly, letting the garment hang below the ankles is not permissible for a man. All of these are sins from which one must guard oneself. It is not permissible for the imam, nor for anyone other than the imam, to engage in them. If he engages in this, it is the right of those responsible for the mosque to seek someone else, if he does not repent. The prayer is valid; the prayer behind him is valid. But it is recommended for those responsible for the mosque to seek an imam who is better than him. It is obligatory for him to repent to Allah from smoking, from the smoke... from shaving the beard... from letting the garment hang below the ankles. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) says: Letting the garment hang below the ankles is a great danger and a major evil.
And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sunan Abi Dawud 4087Sahih (Al-Albani) Narrated by Muslim in his Sahih.
And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1731Sahih (Darussalam) If it is out of arrogance, then it is greater in sin. And if he drags it without intending arrogance, it is forbidden, and it is one of the means of arrogance, but his sin is lighter than the sin of the arrogant one. All of it is forbidden, all of it is evil. This is the correct view. Even if he did not intend arrogance, it is not permissible for him to let his garments hang below the ankles. This is one of the means of arrogance, and one of extravagance, and one of exposing garments to impurities; so it is not permissible.
And the harm of smoking is great, so it is obligatory to leave it and guard against it. May Allah guide them all. Yes.

ما أسفل الكعبين من الإزار؛ فهو في النارAnd he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Narrated Abu Dharr: The Prophet (ﷺ) as saying: There are three to whom Allah will not speak and at whom He will not look on the Day of Resurrection, and whom He will not declare pure, and they will have a painful punishment. I asked: Who are they, Messenger of Allah, they are losers and disappointed ? He repeated it three times. I asked: Who are they. Messenger of Allah, they are losers and disappointed ? He replied: The one who wears a trailing robe, the one who takes account of what he gives, and the one who produces a ready sale of a commodity by false swearing.
