The ruling on combing a woman’s hair and unbraiding her braids in the full ritual bath and the ablution

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Is it obligatory for a woman to comb her hair during the ablution?

Answer:
It is not obligatory for her to comb her hair; rather, she passes water over her hair and that is sufficient. Umm Salamah asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), saying:
O Messenger of Allah! I am a woman whose hair is very long; should I unbraid it for the full ritual bath for major ritual impurity and menstruation? He said—(peace and blessings be upon him)—: It is sufficient for you to sprinkle water on your head three times, then you take the full ritual bath, and you become pure.
In the case of major ritual impurity, she sprinkles water on it three times, and in the ablution, she passes her hands over it by wiping, and that is sufficient. There is no need to unbraid the hair, neither in the full ritual bath nor in the ablution. However, in the full ritual bath, she sprinkles water on it three times, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded, and that is sufficient. And in the ablution, she wipes, passing her hands over the outer surface of the head, and that is sufficient. Yes, she also wipes her ears, placing her fingers in the ear canals and wiping the outer surface of the ears with her thumbs, and that is sufficient. And praise be to Allah.

The presenter : May Allah reward you with good. If the hair is in the form of braids, is she required to undo those braids?

The Shaykh : No, she does not undo them; she passes water over them, and that is sufficient, up to the ends of the braids. We do not know of a requirement other than in the full ritual bath, where she passes water over all of it. As for the ablution, it is up to the roots of the hair, down to the lower part of the head at the roots. If the hair is longer than that, it does no harm.

The presenter : May Allah reward you with good. But in the full ritual bath, is she not required to undo the braids?

Answer : She does not undo them, but she covers them with water; she covers them with water, pouring water over all of it.

The presenter : May Allah bless you.
