The ruling on lost property if it is of little value

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Often, a person finds a small amount of money on his way and takes it; because he says: I found it in the streets of the city, so how can I find the owner of the money? Is there a sin on him for that?

Answer:
If it is a trivial thing that does not attract the attention of the average people, and they do not pay heed to it; then there is no harm, such as a stick of no value, a rope of no value, two dirhams up to ten dirhams, things of that sort. The matter with these is easy, and there is no blame in taking them. As for the thing that has importance and value, he must announce it to his acquaintances in the gathering places of people: Who has such-and-such lost property? Who has the dirhams? Who has the cloak? Who has the known sandal? He clarifies it, he clarifies it, so that when the one who knows this lost property comes, he hands it to him. If he knows its specific, precise characteristics, he gives it to him, or he establishes proof for it. Otherwise, let him leave it, and let someone else take it. As for taking it and not announcing it, no, he must announce the lost property—if it is valuable and has importance—in the gathering places of people, twice or three times a month, until the year is completed. When the year is completed, it is his, like the rest of his wealth. And if its owner comes after that, he gives it to him, even after a long period. Or he appoints a person who knows it to announce it, calling out about it twice or three times a month in the gathering places of people; perhaps it will be found until the year is completed. Yes.
