The Duha Prayer: Its Ruling, Manner, and Time

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
He says: Please give us a ruling on the Duha prayer, regarding the number of its rak'ahs, the recitation in it, the time in which it is performed, and whether it has specific tasbih and tahlil? May Allah reward you with good.

Answer:
The Duha prayer is two rak'ahs, and if one adds more, he prays four, or more; all of it is good. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) advised Abu Hurayrah to pray the two rak'ahs of Duha, and he advised Abu al-Darda' likewise regarding the Duha prayer, and he said (peace and blessings be upon him):
In the morning, charity is due on every joint bone of the body of everyone of you. Every utterance of Allah's Glorification (i.e., saying Subhan Allah) is an act of charity, and every utterance of His Praise (i.e., saying Al-hamdu lillah) is an act of charity and every utterance of declaration of His Greatness (i.e., saying La ilaha illAllah) is an act of charity; and enjoining M'aruf (good) is an act of charity, and forbidding Munkar (evil) is an act of charityيصبح على كل سلامى أحدكم صدقة، فكل تسبيحة صدقة، وكل تهليلة صدقة، وكل تحميدة صدقة، وكل تكبيرة صدقة، وأمر بمعروف صدقة، ونهي عن منكر صدقة
Riyad as-Salihin 1140
Then he said:
And two rak'ahs that you bow in the Duha are sufficient for that.ويكفي من ذلك ركعتان تركعهما من الضحى
Sunan al-Bayhaqi 17:1109
It was narrated by Muslim in the Sahih.
This indicates the great benefit of these two rak'ahs. If one prays four rak'ahs with two taslims, or six rak'ahs with three taslims, or eight rak'ahs with four taslims; all of it is good. Even if he prays more, if he prays ten, twenty, or thirty, giving taslim after every two; all of it is good.
The entire time of Duha is a place for prayer until the sun stands still. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would sometimes pray four, and sometimes more. Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would pray four rak'ahs of Duha and add whatever Allah willed." On the day of the Conquest of Makkah, he prayed eight rak'ahs, giving taslim after every two (peace and blessings be upon him). If he prays more, there is no harm; all of it is good, except when the sun stands still. One should hold back when it is near Dhuhr, a quarter of an hour or half an hour before Dhuhr, when the sun is at its zenith. When it is at the zenith of the sky before it leans toward the west, this is the time of prohibition, the time of standing still, when it is at the zenith of the sky before it leans toward the west; it stands still. One does not pray except for those with specific causes, such as entering the mosque: if one enters before Dhuhr, he prays the greeting of the mosque, or if he circumambulated before Dhuhr in Makkah, around the Ka'bah, he prays the sunnah of the tawaf, or if the sun is eclipsed before Dhuhr, he prays the eclipse prayer, or after 'Asr he prays the eclipse prayer; because it is one of those with specific causes.
It does not have a specific recitation. One reads what is easy for him, he reads al-Fatihah and whatever is easy with it. Praise be to Allah, yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you with good. He asks about the tasbih and tahlil, does it have .... ?

The Shaykh: It is like it. He says Subhan Rabbi al-Azim in the ruku', and Subhan Rabbi al-A'la in the sujud. As for after it, there is nothing specific. Yes.

The presenter : May Allah bless you, may Allah reward you with good.
