Question:
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sahih Muslim 2877c What is the meaning of this hadith?
Answer:
The meaning of that is that it is obligatory for the believer to have a good opinion of Allah, and to guard against having a bad opinion of Allah (Mighty and Majestic). In another hadith, the Lord (Exalted and Majestic is He) says:Sahih Muslim 2675d.
So, it is prescribed for the believer, and it is obligatory upon him, to have a good opinion of Allah, to hope for His mercy and forgiveness, to fear His punishment, and to strive in obeying Allah and obeying His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him); because the more he strives in obedience, the closer he becomes to having a good opinion, and the worse his deeds become, the more this becomes a cause of having a bad opinion, as the poet said:
When a man’s actions become bad, his opinions become bad.
So, the point is that a person should seek what Allah has prescribed for him, and strive in obeying Allah and His Messenger, and leave what Allah and His Messenger have forbidden; because this is among the greatest causes of having a good opinion of Allah (Mighty and Majestic). He should guard against having a bad opinion of Allah (Mighty and Majestic) because he may have disobeyed Him. Rather, he should hasten to repent, and have a good opinion of his Lord that He accepts repentance and has mercy on him (Glorified and Exalted is He). He is the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate, the Generous, the Noble, and He is the One who accepts repentance from His servants.
So, the believer should have a good opinion of Allah, even if he commits a sin. He should have a good opinion of his Lord and hasten to repent, not that he remains in sins. He should hasten and rush to repent, and have a good opinion of his Lord that He accepts his repentance, that He has mercy on him, and that He protects him from His punishment when he repents to Him and turns back (Glorified and Exalted is He). Yes.
