Ruling on occasionally leaving voluntary fasts that one used to fast

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
If a person is accustomed to fasting certain voluntary fasts, such as Mondays and Thursdays, or six days of Shawwal, is it permissible for him to leave them, then fast them, and so on, or is he obligated to keep them? We ask for guidance. May Allah reward you with good.

Answer:
These are voluntary fasts, and he is not obligated to continue with them. If it is easy for him, he fasts, and if it is difficult for him, he leaves them. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would sometimes fast and sometimes leave it off. (peace and blessings be upon him) When he had free time, he would fast consecutively, and when he was busy, he would break his fast consecutively. (peace and blessings be upon him) So if he is fasting Mondays and Thursdays, or six days of Shawwal, or fasting one day and breaking the fast the next, he does so when it is easy for him. And if he leaves it off, there is no blame on him, because it is a voluntary act, not obligatory. He does it whenever he feels energetic, and whenever it becomes heavy for him, or he feels lazy about it, there is no blame in that, and praise be to Allah.
