Voluntary Fasting
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
It is prescribed for a person:- That one fasts three days of every month, whether at the beginning, middle, or end of it, based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): (Fasting three days of every month is fasting the whole year) And Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: (The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to fast three days of every month, and he did not care whether he fasted them at the beginning of the month, the middle, or the end) But it is better that these three days be the White Days, which are the thirteenth, fourteenth, and fifteenth of every month.
- There is also weekly fasting that repeats with the repetition of weeks, which is fasting on Mondays and Thursdays, for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to fast them and said: (Deeds are presented on Mondays and Thursdays, so I love for my deeds to be presented while I am fasting) .
- There is annual fasting throughout the year, which is fasting on the Day of 'Arafah,The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said about it: (I hope that Allah will expiate the year before it and the year after it) .
And fasting on the Day of 'Ashura,The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: (I hope that Allah will expiate the year before it) .
So fasting—praise be to Allah—has always been prescribed, and these days that are fasted complete the defects that occur in Ramadan; indeed, they complete the defects in the fasting of Ramadan, because the fasting of Ramadan must have some defect, whether it is forbidden words that the fasting person says, or a forbidden action that the fasting person does, or a neglect of an obligatory duty that the fasting person neglects, so it needs patching; because these are breaches in the fast that need patching, so they are patched with voluntary acts. For this reason, it came in the hadith that voluntary acts complete the obligatory acts on the Day of Resurrection, and they patch the defects of the obligatory act.
