Question:
Our brother asks and says: I have memorized the meaning of a hadith from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in which he said: Please explain this hadith to us if it is authentic. May Allah reward you with good.
Answer:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon the Messenger of Allah, and upon his family and his Companions, and upon whoever follows his guidance. As for what follows:
I do not know a source for this hadith from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). What is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is that he said:Sunan Abi Dawud 3905Hasan (Al-Albani) Learning astrology to know about events, and claiming knowledge of the unseen, is a great abomination. In fact, it is major shirk (associating partners with Allah); because claiming knowledge of the unseen, or that these stars have an influence in causing events apart from Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) is major disbelief (kufr). Rather, they are, as Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) said, an adornment for the heavens, stones thrown at the devils, and signs by which one is guided. So, if one learns them to know the paths, the times of plowing, and similar matters that are known, there is nothing wrong with that. But if one learns them believing that by this he knows the unseen, or because they are the ones who cause events, then all of this is major disbelief (kufr).
The obligation upon the believer is to adhere to the divine command and to guard against what Allah has forbidden. Allah says :[An-Naml 27:65] So the unseen is with Him, and He is the One who knows it (Exalted and Majestic is He), and it is not with the astrologers, sorcerers, or fortune-tellers, or the like of those who claim knowledge of the unseen. May Allah reward you with good.
