Ruling on Visiting Fortune-Tellers and Astrologers
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: I request an answer regarding the validity of the religion of one who visits fortune-tellers and astrologers and believes in their statements, as they bring forth what resembles the truth. For example, they inform a person of the name of one of his relatives and describe his house, and perhaps they describe the wealth and children he has... and so on?
A: This existed in the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), before him, and after him. For this reason, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prohibited visiting fortune-tellers and asking them questions. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sahih Muslim 2230 and Muslim narrated it in his Sahih. And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Sunan Ibn Majah 639Hasan (Darussalam).
Some people asked him about visiting fortune-tellers, so he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: They said, "O Messenger of Allah, they tell the truth sometimes?" He said: In another narration: Sahih al-Bukhari 6213 People will say, "He told the truth on such and such a day," and that will be a means to believing in all his lies. Fortune-tellers have companions from the jinn devils, called the *ra'i*, meaning the jinn companion who informs him about some of the unseen and some of what happens in the lands. This is known in the pre-Islamic age of ignorance and in Islam. He tells his companion among the sorcerers and fortune-tellers, "Such and such happened in such and such a land on such and such a night," because the jinn pass news among themselves, and the devils among them do so with tremendous speed from all over the world. Therefore, one may be deceived by them if he hears that they told the truth in some matters.
They may also eavesdrop on the hearing, listening to some of what happens in the heavens between the angels, from what Allah (Mighty and Majestic) spoke of regarding the affairs of the people of the earth and what occurs there. When they hear that word, they whisper it into the ears of their companions among the fortune-tellers, sorcerers, and astrologers. They say, "Such and such will happen... and so on." And they do not stop there; rather, they mix a great deal of lies with it so that their merchandise spreads, and they take people's money unjustly because of these events. People, because of this, believe the fortune-tellers and astrologers and visit them. The sick cling to a spider's web and hold on to everything because of what they have heard about them telling the truth in such and such matters.
It is obligatory not to visit them, not to ask them questions, and not to believe them, even if they happen to tell the truth in some matter. This is because the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) prohibited visiting them, asking them questions, and believing them. This is the obligation upon everyone. They should follow what Allah has prescribed in treating the sick, namely recitation and permissible medicine known by doctors. These are the lawful causes and means, and in them is sufficiency, if Allah wills, from what Allah has forbidden.

من أتى عرافًا فسأله عن شيء، لم تقبل له صلاة أربعين ليلةor who goes to a fortuneteller and believes what he says, he has disbelieved in that which was revealed to Muhammad.
من اتى كاهنًا فصدقه بما يقول، فقد كفر بما أنزل على محمد ﷺSome people asked him about visiting fortune-tellers, so he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Do not visit them, for they are nothing
لا تأتهم فليسوا بشيءThat word is heard by the jinn devil from the heavens while he is eavesdropping, so he whispers it into the ear of his companion among the humans, who is the fortune-teller and the sorcerer. He tells the truth in that word, but they lie and add a hundred lies to it
