The Ruling on Reciting the Qur'an Without Contemplation
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Following this, a message was sent by one of the listening brothers from al-Madinah al-Munawwarah. He says: Is reading the Qur'an without contemplation considered a sin? Because sometimes I do not notice myself contemplating. Please guide us, may Allah reward you with good. I also notice that I am preoccupied during some of the recitations. Please guide us, may Allah reward you with good?
Answer: It is a recommended practice (sunnah) to contemplate. If one reads without contemplation, there is no blame on him. However, it is a recommended practice (sunnah) to pay attention to contemplation and looking at what one is reading so that he benefits and gains profit. This is because Allah, the Exalted, says: [Surah Sad: 29], and He, the Exalted, says: [Surah An-Nisa: 82]. All of this is an encouragement and exhortation to contemplate. So, it is a recommended practice (sunnah) to contemplate, to pay attention, and to strive to understand what one is reading and to act upon it. But if it happens that he is preoccupied from that, there is no blame on him.
