Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
From the Hadhramaut Governorate of the Democratic Republic of Yemen, this is a letter sent by the listener 'Abbud Ahmad Bu 'Askar. Brother 'Abbud included a collection of questions in his letter, among which is a question that says: Is this hadith authentic? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
There are ninety-nine names of Allah; he who commits them to memory would get into Paradise.لله تسعة وتسعون اسمًا، من حفظها دخل الجنة
Sahih Muslim 2677a
?

Answer:
Yes, it is authentic. It was narrated by the two Shaykhs, al-Bukhari and Muslim, in the two Sahihs. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Indeed, Allah has ninety-nine Names, whoever counts them shall enter Paradise.إن لله تسعة وتسعين اسمًا، من أحصاها دخل الجنة
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 3508Sahih (Darussalam)
And in another wording:
and whoever believes in their meanings and acts accordingly, will enter Paradise; and Allah is witr (one) and loves 'the witr' (i.e., odd numbers).من حفظها دخل الجنة، وهو وتر يحب الوتر
Sahih al-Bukhari 6410
The scholars said: The meaning of “whoever enumerates them” and the meaning of “whoever memorizes them” is that he masters them, reflects on their meanings, and acts in accordance with their implications. So if he enumerates them but does not act in accordance with their implications, he does not attain this virtue. But if he enumerates them, reflects on them, memorizes them, understands them, and acts in accordance with their implications—by magnifying Allah, sanctifying Him, fulfilling His commands, and abandoning His prohibitions—he will enter Paradise because he has fulfilled the obligatory duties, abandoned the forbidden things, and the memorization and enumeration of these names have become among the means of his activity in truth, his magnification of the Lord, his following of the Shari'ah, and his caution regarding what Allah and His Messenger have forbidden. Yes.
