The Lawfulness of Plural Marriage in Islam

Your Eminence! This message was sent by its presenter, Abdullah al-Salih. He says: My brother, the presenter of the program "Light on the Path," I hope you will address my problem. My brother, there is a serious social problem that has escalated due to the social invasion, which is the lack of plural marriage. What is your opinion on this?
Answer: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, and may peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, and upon his family and his companions, and whoever follows his guidance.
As for what follows: There is no doubt that plural marriage contains many benefits. And Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, said: [Surat al-Nisa: 3].
So Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, prescribed plural marriage for His servants for many benefits: among them is the chastity of the man and the chastity of the women, for marriage is a cause of chastity for the man from what Allah has forbidden, and a cause of chastity for the women from what Allah has forbidden. And a man remaining without a wife, or with a wife who does not satisfy him because he is strong in desire, may be harmed by this and exposed to trials. Likewise, a woman remaining without a husband may be exposed to trial. So out of the mercy of Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He, He prescribed marriage for His servants and prescribed plural marriage so that much good may be obtained from it. And among the causes of this is that a man may not be satisfied with one wife; he may be strong in desire so that one wife is not sufficient for him, and he may therefore be exposed to what Allah has forbidden, so Allah prescribed plural marriage for him. And among that is also that a woman menstruates and also experiences post-natal bleeding, so the man is prevented for the duration of the post-natal bleeding and the duration of menstruation. If he has a second or third wife, he finds what satisfies him when the first woman is prevented and when there is something preventing intercourse. Likewise, a woman may fall ill or travel for some reasons. So the result is that the need for a second, third, or fourth wife is apparent.
Likewise, women may be numerous and remain without husbands, so their being with a husband who chastes them, cares for them, provides for them, and protects them is better for them than their remaining without marriage and not being married, even if they are four under one man.
So what the Shari'ah has brought is all good and all rectification for the society, so it is not befitting for a person of reason to disapprove of it. And although some women may disapprove of it due to a lack of understanding, a lack of insight, and a lack of knowledge, otherwise plural marriage contains benefits for everyone, for both men and women. But some women may deny this matter and disapprove of it, preferring safety, and that is due to not looking at the consequences and a lack of insight in the religion.
So it is not befitting for a woman to disapprove of this matter. Yes, there is no harm if she is safe from a co-wife, there is no harm. But it is not permissible for her to disapprove of the ruling of Allah, nor to dislike the ruling of Allah. Rather, she must be pleased with the ruling of Allah, and know that the ruling of Allah contains good for everyone and happiness for everyone, even if she suffers some harm from the neighbor, or if she is alone on some nights, that does not harm her, and praise be to Allah, as long as the matter is according to the Shari'ah of Allah and contains many benefits, she should bear it and be patient and not disapprove of the husband who has more than one wife. Rather, if it is easy for her to have a husband with whom she has no partner, there is no harm. Otherwise, it is not befitting for her to endure loneliness and remain without a husband for the sake of avoiding a co-wife. Rather, she should be patient and marry a husband who has a wife before her or two wives, and there is no harm for her in that if he is just. Yes.
