What are the benefits obtained through plural marriage?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
People reject (plural marriage), and some even consider it forbidden. Currently, there is a serious problem of spinsterhood in society.

Answer:
Allah, (Exalted and Majestic is He), says:
then marry those that please you of [other] women, two or three or four. But if you fear that you will not be just, then [marry only] one or those your right hand possessesفَانْكِحُوا مَا طَابَ لَكُمْ مِنَ النِّسَاءِ مَثْنَى وَثُلَاثَ وَرُبَاعَ فَإِنْ خِفْتُمْ أَلَّا تَعْدِلُوا فَوَاحِدَةً أَوْ مَا مَلَكَتْ أَيْمَانُكُمْ
[Surat al-Nisa: 3]. So, the original ruling is plural marriage, and this is in the interest of both men and women. Plural marriage benefits the man and the woman. A man may find that one wife is not sufficient for him; he may have strong sexual desire, so one wife is not enough. He needs two, three, or four wives so that he can guard his chastity, lower his gaze, and protect his private parts.
Likewise, women are in need of men. If a man marries only one woman, many women remain without husbands. If men practice plural marriage, women gain a benefit from it. It is better for a woman to be with a husband, even if he has other wives, than to remain a spinster with no husband.
The point is that plural marriage is the Sunnah, it is the most beneficial, and it is the most useful for everyone, provided the husband is able to do so. It is better for a woman to be given half of a man, or a third, or a quarter, than to remain a spinster with no one.
Women should know this matter and beware of harmful jealousy. The same applies to their guardians. A woman should not refuse to marry a man who has one wife, two wives, or three wives. No, Allah has permitted this for him, and there are many benefits for men and women in it. It provides protection for private parts, chastity for the man and the woman, lowering of the gaze, assistance to the poor woman and taking care of her, and protection and safeguarding her from corruption.
So, there is much good and great benefits in plural marriage. But many women are ignorant of this, and some guardians are ignorant of it. It is obligatory to be alert to this matter. Half of a man, a quarter of a man, or a third of a man is better than her remaining alone. Then the man enters her, protects her, is respected, and provides for her if she is poor.
In any case, the benefit in plural marriage is great. Likewise, everything that Allah has legislated has a great benefit, even if people are ignorant of it. Allah did not legislate plural marriage except for a benefit.
Among those before us, it was permissible for a man to have ninety or one hundred wives. Sulayman ibn Dawud (peace and blessings be upon him) had ninety wives. His father, Dawud, had one hundred wives. Then Allah prohibited in the Shari'ah of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) anything more than four, easing the burden on this Ummah and making it only four. But women do not understand this matter, and some guardians also do not understand the benefit. For this reason, many of them dislike plural marriage, refuse it, and prevent marriage to a man who has a wife.
Some callers to falsehood in some radio stations, newspapers, or elsewhere do what repels a woman from a husband who has a wife, as if it were a crime. This is abominable—we seek refuge in Allah from it—and these people who repel people from it are ignorant of Allah’s command, or they are open sinners who disobey Allah—we ask Allah for safety.
It is necessary to be alert to this matter. It is obligatory for the believer to be pleased with what Allah has legislated. Allah, the Exalted, says:
That is because they disliked what Allah revealed, so He rendered worthless their deeds.ذَلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمْ كَرِهُوا مَا أَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ فَأَحْبَطَ أَعْمَالَهُمْ
[Surat Muhammad: 9]. It is obligatory for the believing man and woman to be pleased with what Allah has legislated, to love it, and not to dislike it, even if it is against their own selves.
