The ruling on stoning the pillars with pebbles broken from a single stone
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Your Eminence, Shaykh Abdul Aziz! We received this message from Hajj Bin Qali, who says (M. N. J) Bin Qali, he says: To the honorable scholars answering on the Saudi Arabian Radio, may Allah guide them, amen. I broke a large stone into twenty-one stones and threw them on the second day, meaning on the first day of the days of Tashriq. Is my stoning considered valid, or is it considered one stone according to its original state? May Allah guide you?
Answer: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, and blessings and peace be upon the Messenger of Allah, and upon his family and his Companions, and upon those who follow his guidance.
As for what follows:
The Sunnah and what is better is for a person to pick up stones from the ground without breaking them; he should pick up pebbles from the ground without breaking them. This is because breaking them may hurt him, may harm him, or a piece may fly toward him. So if he takes them from the ground, that is more preferable and safer. And if he breaks them, there is no harm. If he breaks them from a large stone and extracts twenty-one pebbles or seven pebbles from it, that suffices for him, and there is no harm even if they are broken from a stone. So if he throws seven pebbles at each pillar from this large stone that he broke, it suffices and there is no harm. However, the scholars mentioned that it is more preferable and safer, and further from danger, for him to pick up small stones without breaking them; because something may fly toward him when breaking them, and it may harm him, harm his eye, or harm something else. This is the intended point, otherwise there is no harm in it. Yes.
