The ruling on one who was breastfed by his grandmother and wishes to marry one of his paternal cousins

This is a letter sent by Hamud ibn Sulayman ibn Salman al-Juhani from Marur al-Madinah al-Munawwarah. He says in his letter: Before I share my letter with you, I would like to convey my thanks and appreciation to those who run this program and to the honorable scholars and shaykhs who answer the letters of the listeners.
He says he has a problem regarding breastfeeding. He says: I inform you that my mother passed away from the date of my birth. We were residents of the desert, and they fed me from the milk of camels and sheep. Then my grandmother, my father’s mother, took care of me, her heart softened toward me, and she breastfed me from herself. After that, the days passed and I grew up. My father had brothers from his mother and his father, and they have daughters. I wanted to marry one of them. Is it permissible for me or not? Please inform me, may Allah reward you with good for us, and accept my greetings.
Answer: If the questioner’s grandmother breastfed him with a complete breastfeeding of five breastfeedings or more while he was within the two-year period, then he becomes a brother to his father and his paternal uncles, and an uncle to his paternal cousins. Therefore, it is not permissible for him to marry any of them, because he has become their uncle through breastfeeding. It is necessary to be certain in this matter. If the grandmother had milk that she breastfed you from—O questioner—five times, meaning five breastfeedings or more, while you were within the two-year period, then she becomes your mother through breastfeeding, and you become a brother to your father and your paternal uncles through breastfeeding, and an uncle to your paternal cousins through breastfeeding. Therefore, it is not permissible for you to marry any of them. And Allah the Exalted knows best.
